About Home Adapt Guide
Last edited October 15, 2026
Home Adapt Guide is a reference for the people who make homes safer for older adults and people with disabilities: occupational therapists, home modification dealers, installers and accessibility contractors, hospital discharge teams, and the funders and program managers who pay for the work. It covers Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
What the guides cover
The guides answer the questions that come up on the job: what a building code or standard requires, which program pays and who qualifies, what to check on a home visit, and which tools are used to assess and document a home. Where the rules differ between countries, there is a separate guide for each, plus a comparison. You can browse guides for Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
How the guides are written
The guides are written by the Home Adapt Guide Team. Every number, standard and program rule links to its primary source: the code or standard itself, the regulation, or the government or program page. Section and clause numbers are given so readers can check them. Where a fact changes each year, such as a grant amount or a tax rate, the guide says which year it applies to. Each guide shows the date it was last edited, and the sources are rechecked at least every six months.
Pages that touch on clinical practice, such as grab bar placement or discharge home visits, are reviewed by an occupational therapist before they are published.
The guides describe what the rules say. They are not legal, tax or clinical advice for a specific person or home, and local codes and program rules can differ. Check with the building department, the funder or a qualified professional before starting work.
Who publishes Home Adapt Guide
Home Adapt Guide is published by the team behind OmaScan, a home assessment app. We cover tools on their merits, and every page that includes OmaScan says so. See how we evaluate tools.
